Do You Want to Be Rich?
Everyone wants to be rich. Everyone wants to own a big house and not have to work for money. Everyone wants to be able to afford the best car, clothes, food, house; the best everything. But is everyone ready to pay the cost?
We can learn lessons of how to become rich from
King Jehoshaphat in the Bible (2nd Chronicles 17). The Bible says that, “The Lord
was with Jehoshaphat because he followed in his ancestor David’s footsteps at
the beginning of his reign… 2nd Chronicles 17:3). Jehoshaphat did not worship
idols, like the community surrounding him did. “Instead [he] sought the God of
his ancestors and obeyed his commands…”.
Because Jehoshaphat obeyed the Lord and worshipped only Him, “The Lord made his kingdom secure; all Judah brought
tribute to Jehoshaphat, and he became very wealthy and greatly respected.”
So we see that the reason Jehoshaphat became
wealthy and respected is because he followed the footsteps of King David, who
was a “man after God’s own heart”. However, he did not follow the Lord only, he
also destroyed the idols in the land. “He was committed
to following the Lord; he even removed the high places and Asherah poles
from Judah.”
The second reason why Jehoshaphat became wealthy
is that he destroyed the idols and images in the land. We too need to destroy
the idols in our life. An idol is anything that prevents you from serving the
Lord. Friends, loved ones, our jobs, spouses, and especially in today’s
society-pornography are all idols in today’s society. What is causing you not
to serve the Lord today? Do you want God’s blessings including contentment and
maybe wealth? Destroy anything in your life that prevents you from serving God.
Job was a very wealthy person. However he was
also a very disciplined person. We read in Job about the covenant he made, “31:1
“I made a covenant with my eyes; how then could I entertain thoughts against a
virgin?” Job decided to be careful what his eyes looked at so that he did not
lust for women. Do you watch pornography (even the so called soft pornography)?
Do you want to be rich? These two do not go together.
